Privacy Policy

Your privacy matters to us. This policy explains what personal data AM Learning collects, why we collect it, how we use it, and the choices you have. AM Learning is operated by Heuristics of Science and Technology, located in Sierra Leone.

Data We Collect

We collect information in the following ways: information you provide directly to us, information generated as you use the Service, and information received from third-party services (such as Google) when you choose to connect them.

Account & Profile Data

  • Full name
  • Email address
  • Password (stored as a secure hash — we never store plaintext passwords)
  • Phone number (optional)
  • Profile photo
  • Biography / about text
  • Location (country, city — optional)
  • Role (student, teacher, institution administrator)

Verification Data (Teachers)

When you apply to become a teacher, we may collect additional information to verify your identity and qualifications, such as government-issued identification and professional credentials.

Course & Content Data

Content you upload or create: course titles, descriptions, video files, PDF documents, written lessons (Markdown text), quiz questions and answers, and course thumbnail images.

Transaction & Wallet Data

  • Course purchase history
  • Wallet top-up and withdrawal records
  • Payment method details (processed by our payment partner — we do not store full card numbers on our servers)
  • Donation history
  • Instructor payout records

Usage & Activity Data

  • Courses viewed, enrolled in, and completed
  • Lesson progress (which lessons have been watched or read)
  • Quiz attempts and scores
  • Forum posts and replies
  • Course reviews and ratings
  • Notification interactions
  • Live session attendance and participation
  • Blog posts and events viewed

Technical & Device Data

  • IP address
  • Browser type and version
  • Operating system
  • Device identifiers
  • Time zone and language settings
  • Pages visited and navigation patterns
  • Referral source (how you found us)

Communications Data

When you contact us (by email or through the platform inquiry form), we retain records of that correspondence. We also track email delivery, open, and click events for newsletters and notification emails to measure engagement and troubleshoot delivery issues.

Google Sign-In

You may choose to register or sign in to AM Learning using your Google account ("Google Sign-In"). When you use this option, Google shares certain profile information with us, including your name and email address. We use this information to create and manage your AM Learning account.

We do not receive your Google password. We only request the minimum permissions needed to create your account (typically your name, email address, and profile picture).

Your use of Google Sign-In is also subject to Google's Privacy Policy.

How We Use Your Data

We use the data we collect to:

  • Create and manage your account.
  • Provide, operate, and improve the AM Learning platform.
  • Process course purchases, donations, and wallet transactions.
  • Deliver course content and track your learning progress.
  • Facilitate live class sessions.
  • Send transactional emails (receipts, password resets, email verification, live class reminders).
  • Send newsletters and platform updates to subscribers (opt-out available).
  • Enable institution administrators to send newsletters to their subscribers.
  • Verify teacher applications and manage teacher accounts.
  • Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, and policy violations.
  • Comply with our legal obligations.
  • Generate anonymised analytics to understand platform usage and improve course recommendations.
  • Respond to your inquiries and support requests.

We process your data based on one of the following legal bases: contract performance (to provide the service you signed up for), legitimate interests (platform security, fraud prevention, service improvement), legal obligation, or your consent.

Email Communications

We send the following types of emails. Here is what each type is and how you can manage it:

We will never send you unsolicited marketing emails from third parties. We will never sell or rent your email address.

Payments & Wallet Data

Course purchases, wallet top-ups, and donation payments are processed through our payment partners. We do not store full credit or debit card numbers on our servers. Payment tokenisation and encryption are handled by our payment partners in accordance with PCI-DSS standards.

We retain records of transaction amounts, dates, associated course or item, and wallet balances to provide you with transaction history, process refunds, and comply with financial record-keeping requirements.

For instructor and institution payouts, we may collect additional information required for money transfer (such as bank account details or mobile money numbers). This information is used solely for the purpose of processing your payout.

Course & Learning Data

We track your learning activity — including which lessons you have completed, your quiz scores, live session attendance, and overall course progress — to:

  • Display your progress within the course player and your dashboard.
  • Determine course completion for any associated certificates.
  • Allow you to resume where you left off.
  • Provide instructors with aggregated (anonymised) analytics about course engagement (not individually identifiable data).

Instructors do not see your individually identified quiz scores or lesson progress — they see only aggregated platform-wide statistics.

Sharing Your Data

We do not sell your personal data. We may share data in the following circumstances:

  • Service providers: We share data with third-party vendors who assist us in operating the platform (e.g. cloud hosting, payment processors, email delivery services, video hosting). These vendors are contractually bound to use your data only to provide services to us.
  • Institutions: If you enrol in a course offered by an institution, the institution may see your name, email, and enrolment status for that course. Institutions do not receive your payment information.
  • Public profile: Information you choose to make public on your profile (display name, bio, profile photo, and public activity) is visible to other users.
  • Legal requirements: We may disclose your information if required by law, court order, or government authority, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of AM Learning, its users, or the public.
  • Business transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your data may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you of any such change.

Cookies & Local Storage

AM Learning uses browser cookies and local storage to keep you logged in, remember your preferences (such as dark mode), and maintain session state across page navigations.

We may also use analytics cookies to understand how the platform is used in aggregate so we can improve it.

You can control cookie behaviour through your browser settings. Disabling essential cookies may affect your ability to sign in and use the platform.

We do not use advertising cookies or share cookie data with advertising networks.

Data Retention

We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. Specifically:

  • Account and profile data: retained until you delete your account.
  • Transaction and financial records: retained for at least 7 years to comply with accounting and tax obligations.
  • Learning progress data: retained for the lifetime of your account.
  • Course content uploaded by instructors: retained until the instructor removes it or their account is deleted.
  • Support correspondence: retained for up to 3 years.
  • Server and access logs: retained for up to 12 months for security purposes.

When you delete your account, we will delete or anonymise your personal data within 90 days, except where we are required to retain it by law.

Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your personal data, including:

  • Encryption of data in transit using TLS (HTTPS).
  • Encryption of sensitive data at rest.
  • Secure password hashing (plaintext passwords are never stored).
  • Access controls limiting who within our organisation can access personal data.
  • Regular security reviews.

No method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your personal data, we cannot guarantee absolute security. In the event of a data breach that affects your rights, we will notify you and relevant authorities as required by applicable law.

Children's Privacy

AM Learning does not knowingly collect personal data from children under the age of 13. If you are under 13, please do not use the Service or provide any personal information.

If we become aware that we have inadvertently collected personal data from a child under 13 without verifiable parental consent, we will take immediate steps to delete that information from our records.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child under 13 has provided us with personal data, please contact us at sierra.amlearning@gmail.com and we will promptly address the matter.

Your Rights & Choices

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correction: Update or correct inaccurate data through your account settings at any time.
  • Deletion: Request deletion of your account and associated personal data.
  • Portability: Request an export of your personal data in a commonly used format.
  • Objection: Object to processing of your personal data for certain purposes.
  • Opt-out of marketing emails: Unsubscribe from newsletters at any time using the link in any email or at /newsletter/unsubscribe.

International Data Transfers

AM Learning is operated from Sierra Leone. If you are accessing the Service from outside Sierra Leone, your data may be transferred to, stored, and processed in Sierra Leone or in other countries where our service providers operate.

By using the Service, you consent to your information being transferred to and processed in countries outside your country of residence, which may have different data protection laws.

We ensure that any international transfers of personal data are conducted with appropriate safeguards.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make significant changes we will update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you by email.

We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
